How to Deal With Summertime Sadness As a Teen – 9 Tips

Lana Del Rey sings “I’ve got that summertime, summertime sadness”.

girl in red sings “summer depression, there’s so much time to question my life”.

Yup, it’s not that rare to feel the weird sadness during summetime.

I am in such state every year so this problem is very close to me.

And if you’re prone to it too, I’ll share with you what helps me to deal with summer sadness. Scroll down!

1 – tune your playlist

Stop listening to sad songs. They just make it all worse.

But I agree that happy pop ones do not fit in the mood.

So what to do?

Create a playlist and put the saddest songs in the beginning.

With every song the mood should go up. So at the end of the playlist there should be the songs that make you feel good.

Something like this:

the saddest song – less sad – neutral one – not so sad – good songs.

Such playlist helps sooo much honestly!

2 – do something uplifting

Watch a nice movie.

Especially the one that you’ve seen many many times but it still makes you laugh and feel better (I love “Grown-Ups” for that reason heheh).

If not a movie, then watch some hilarious videos on YouTube.

Lately, I’ve been obsessed with Larray, Twaimz, and Ravon.

These 3 are the funniest dudes on the Internet!

And they do not make me feel bad about myself, as some youtubers do.

If the screens make you sick, go on a nice walk.

Pick some flowers, take a dog with you (if you have one), go and hug a tree. There are so many things you can do!

3 – why you feel sad

If it all doesn’t actually help but only distracts you, then get into the cause of your sadness.

List and write down every reason you can think of why you feel sad.

No friends, boring town, others are having more fun – list everything. Be honest.

Maybe it won’t help you that much.

But for me, knowing the cause of my sadness makes it less depressive.

4 – stop overthinking

I know it sounds easier than to do it. But give it a try.

Be aware of and attentive to your thoughts.

Everytime you catch yourself overthinking, gently remind yourself “I’m overthinking again. Not every thought is true”.

And repeat some nice self-love affirmations.

I have a great post for the affirmations ideas!

5 – don’t compare yourself to others

I know you can’t help it when others seem to have more fun than you.

But comparison won’t bring you any good.

The next time you catch yourself thinking that your summer is miserable, remind yourself:

  • I know this might not be the best period of my life, but I’m sure that the happiest moments of my life are yet to come.

I’ve survived 4 summers with the help of this quote and hopefully will get through this one too heheh.

Also, I have the whole post on how you can stop comparing yourself to others. Check it out!

6 – get out of toxic social media

Ohh how toxic socials can be!

Right now, set an intention to prioritize your mental health over endless feed scrolling.

You can unfollow everyone who doesn’t inspire you in any way.

Unfollow everyone who makes you feel bad about yourself.

Let the people who really worth your attention be in your feed.

Because toxic accounts may be one of the reasons why you feel unhappy.

7 – review your yearly/monthly goals

If you’ve set any intentions, resolutions, goals it’s time to review them.

Maybe you wanted to start working out at the beginning of the year but something was off and you’re not doing it.

Now it’s time to do that!

Maybe you wanted to start a blog but got scared that it might not be successful.

The time is now!

Your summer is not over yet! Do the things that you’ve always wanted to do.

Go towards the goals you’ve always wanted to accomplish.

Doesn’t matter how big or small they might seem.

Do it, Do it, Do it!

8 – get into your hobbies

Another thing you can do to help you get through your summertime sadness is to dive deep into your hobbies.

My favorite ones are blogging and learning a new language.

I’ve got so busy into doing it, I don’t have time for being sad and overthinking anymore.

And honestly, this is the best thing ever.

Last summers I wasn’t that busy so I think that’s why I felt so bad.

So get into the things you love and that keep you thriving!

Discover your new passions! Try new things! Improve existing skills!

There are so many things you can do!

9 – change something

Bring some changes into your life and environment.

It can be as small as adding new decor to your living space.

And as big as getting a new hairstyle.

But do not obsess over it heheh!
